Straw Bale Gardening

Here’s one of our projects for the weekend.  Basically you lay out bales of clean straw and keep them very saturated with water, to which you can add some high-ammonia fertilizer to speed thing up if you want.  Even with just the water, in 4 weeks the wet straw will turn into a nice, raised bed with its own compost.  Just put some potting mix on top if you’re sowing seeds, or slip transplants down through the hay, and fill in with potting soil, and you’re all set.

Instant, super prepared raised bed garden you can mow around.  Glorious.

And best of all, this is the weekend to do that if you’re in my part of the country!  Spring is coming!
